Kartchner Caverns

WOW!!!  Mother Nature has truly been working on an underground masterpiece!  To protect the fragile environment of this living cave, we weren't allowed any cameras, purses, backpacks, etc. I felt like panicking at the thought of not having my camera but managed to survive.

I took as many photos inside the gift shop and small displays as I could trying to find some way to share the magnitude of the formations we saw along the underground tour.  I can't begin to describe the huge rooms and caverns we saw with the thousands of stalactites and stalagmites protruding from the ceilings and floors.  The formations were absolutely wondrous.

These photos are some displays or postcards showing what the inside of the caves look like.  This is the best I can offer.

Two young adventurous men discovered this underground wonder after crawling through very small tunnels barely shoulder width wide into pitch darkness with naught but the small dim lights on their helmets.  They're certainly braver than me!  They must have felt like earthworms or moles tunneling their way in the pitch black.  Imagine how they felt though when they broke through into these open caverns.  What a marvel.  Thanks to their caring dedication, the caves were protected and yet made available to the public to observe.

This display shows the size of the tunnels the two explorers encountered on their journey.

This was a very popular event as we had two full bus loads of "creekers" who enjoyed the day making it not only a memorable adventure but a fun outing with friends as well.
